Prince Press Conference at the Apollo Theatre
October 14, 20ten
I just happened to check prince.org during a conference this morning, just in time to learn that Prince was having a press conference at the Apollo Theatre at 6:00 p.m. LiveNation posted on facebook about a press conference, too. So everyone assumed it had to do with touring/concerts. I am still hoping my prayer that he does a residency at the Apollo comes true. I made it through the rain to the Apollo before 6pm. The press was there, but so were some true fans. It was done so mysteriously that the Apollo was not filled. After playing mostly his music, especially lots of tracks from 20ten, At 6:21 p.m., Steven Hill from B.E.T. came out to say that he did not know what Prince was going to say. Signs in the lobby showed Prince with the words Welcome 2 America. Those words and Princes name lit up the ceiling of the Apollo. Prince took the stage in sunglasses and a very mature black outfit. Prince said Welcome 2 America will start on a purple day in December 20ten. Its what weve all been waiting for: multiple nights withthe best artists. Joining the tour will be Maceo Parker, Janell Monae, Mint Condition, Esperanza Spalding, Cassandra Wilson, Sinbad, LaLa Hathaway, Sheila E., Larry Graham and the NPG. Prince said come early and often. Every show will be different. Bring friends and children. Bring foot spray because its gonna be funky. After asking if we had seen Waiting for Superman, Prince introduced Jeffrey Canada, who talked about the next Harlem Renaissance. Then they played Princes new song Rich Friends, very loudly. Steven Hill came out to explain that the gold-plated guitar on stage would not be played tonight. Instead, Prince will play it every night and then auction it off for the Harlem Empowerment Zone (did he mean Harlem Childrens Zone?). Prince did not perform but showed two videos from his 21 Nights in London, performing Guitar and Controversy.
